Windsurfing in Tallinn

Windsurfing and kitesurfing is quite popular here in Estonia. Sadly, thats for only about 6 months every year, when the sea is in its liquid form and outside temperatures are above 10c.

For beginners

I think windsurfing is a great opportunity to get yourself out of the apartment :) For the very first time, you will need some instruction. In Tallinn, your options are limited to Pirita Surfclub. If you don’t mind travelling a bit, check out Aloha in Pärnu, Surfhunt Epp‘s place in Varbla, Saaremaa surfiklubi at Nasva, Saaremaa or Pro2 windsurfing at Roosta.

Once you’ve had at least some training and in a posession of a car, your options are wide open. You can rent your gear from Surfhouse, Tallinn and go whereever you like. Near Tallinn, the absolute favorite for beginners with their own gear is Püünsi with western winds – clear steady wind with absolutely no waves.

Overall conditions

Although the wind is most likely to blow from west, all other directions are very common as well. So, the best chances for a good windsurfing day are by travelling to the beach where the wind suits the best. It’s quite common to travel 70 miles to Rohuküla just for a good few hours. Winds just tend to be stronger on west coast.

To get a good suggestion for a windsurf beach, better ask from any windsurf shop, surfclub or ask someone to translate this page. Some hints:

  • For wave-lovers, the absolute favorites are Ristna in Hiiumaa and Vääna Jõesuu not far from Tallinn. Narva Jõesuu also, but the chances of high winds are scarce there.
  • For flat water with the best winds on mainland, check out Topu near Haapsalu.
  • On islands Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, you have the best chances of wind, with plenty of spots for any wind  direction!
  • The highest rate of convenience you’ll find in Pirita - a sauna just for the surfers on the beach!

Windsurfing Events

In summer, there are competitions going on every weekend. Dozens of scheduled evets plus ad-hoc wave, freestyle and slalom competitions announced few days ahead. In mid-July there’s the famous windsurfing camp; in August, the Aegna Marathon, 15 mile round-trip from Pirita to island Aegna.
