Skype on Travel

Skype has lot to do with Tallinn. Its technical center is located here, in Mustamäe – lots of servers and software engineers.

Skype is a bliss for a traveler. You can have free chat and calls to any place you can find internet. Read more: How to get mobile internet working in your apartment or anywhere you go?!

Skype on travel

Few tips for travellers:

  • Skype also works on almost any smartphone (iPhone, Android, Nokia/Symbian). It needs either a Wifi connection or 3G data.
  • The latter has become available also for travelers in most countries, where you can get generous 3G plan for a dozen pounds for a week or a month. Sadly, information on this topic is quite scarce (or only in local language) on the internet.
  • When travelling out of EU (where it’s really expensive to pick up incoming calls) for a longer period, you may want to check out Skype’s Online number service, which gives you a UK-based landline number your friends can use. For a low flat fee, those calls are forwarded to your skype account, whereever you are.
  • Whenever I travel outside of the EU, I will get myself a local SIM card as a first thing. The second thing would be forwarding my Skype calls to this number. That way I can receive calls without paying ridiculously high roaming fees. For instance, picking up my regular phone in Thailand costs me some £2 per minute while picking up my Skype calls forwarded to a local phone costs 7p per minute!

At home, I use Skype for local landline calls, as the cost is 1/3 of mobile calls. Since there is a Skype app for my Android phone, I don’t have to mess with a Skype headset for PC.
